Lines of Refuge – Artist statement by Luis de León Sept. 2016
When Luis de León moved to the United States, he began his first line drawings, and they took on certain forms. Children crossing the border, anguished people, and animals caught in comical moments, each of whom reflect parts of the artist’s personality. Luis sought refuge in each one of the drawings that filled his sketchbooks. Beginning with black and white, he later began to experiment with colors. It was the best catharsis that he had found in order to confront his fears and frustrations after being forced to flee from Guatemala.
In the U.S., he was able to refine the artistic talents that he rediscovered. First photography, then music, and now drawings. He worked full-time as a journalist for over 15 years, and the last job that Luis had in Guatemala was intense. It involved investigating drug trafficking, private and governmental corruption, contraband, and this robbed him of his peace. After receiving death threats, he and his family decided to move to Louisville, KY, where his wife was from.
Luis’ adaptation to a new country was made easier when he met the members of the local band, Appalatin, a group that he joined seven years ago.
He began to focus more on his drawings after receiving assistance from the team at the Survivors of Torture Recovery Center (STRC).
Luis De León’s childhood took place in the coffee plantations of Southern Chiapas and the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Young Luis spend his time climbing trees, swimming in creeks, foraging for wild fruits, and building and flying kites.
Luis studid his primary grades in Guatemala y México, and then in high school he took a few art classes, then he moved to Guatemala Coty to study Communication at the Rafael Landivar University. During this time he took art classes from an artists’ collective at Cerrito de Carmen.
His drawings reflect the search for his own style of expression, and his drawings reflect the influences of Shel Silverstein, Martin Prechtel, and Tim Burton.
The creator of “Lines of Refuge” intends to offer a moment of reflection and provoke laughs among the viewers. Luis changed his perspective of he world when he began to draw, encountering interesting shapes in ordinary things, and he carries a camera with him to capture images and turn then into drawings.
In addition to playing with Appalatin, Luis also plays with Zach Longoria Project and Tristen Brooke, and he takes advantage of down time in between sound checks and road trips to capture moments in his sketchbook.

Lines of Refuge
Cuando Luis de León se movió a Estados Unidos empezó a dibujar sus primeras líneas que fueron adquiriendo ciertas formas. Niños cruzando la frontera, personas en angustia y animales en momentos cómicos reflejan parte de su personalidad del artista. Luis se refugió en cada uno de sus dibujos que plasmaba en sus libretas. Inicio con blanco y negro, después fue experimentando con los colores. Fue la mejor catarsis que encontró para enfrentar sus miedos y frustraciones tras su huida de Guatemala.
En Estados Unidos mejoró algunos de sus talentos artísticos que estarían por redescubrir. Primero fue la fotografía, luego fue la música y ahora los dibujos. Trabajó como periodista de tiempo completo por más de 15 años, el último trabajo que tuvo en Guatemala fue intenso, investigar el contrabando de las drogas, los actos de corrupción gubernamental y privada le robaron su paz. Tras recibir amenazas de muerte decidieron con su familia instalarse en Louisville, Kentucky, la ciudad natal de su esposa.
Como todo proceso de adaptación a un nuevo país fue más fácil tras conocer a miembros de la banda de Appalatin, agrupación que forma desde hace siete años

La infancia de Luis De León se desarrolló entre las fincas de café del sur de Chiapas y el occidente de Guatemala. Si hay algo que hizo Luis de pequeño fue trepar arboles, nadar en ríos, comer frutas silvestre, volar y construir barriletes.
Luis estudió su primaria entre Guatemala y México, en la secundaría tomó algunos cursos de dibujo artístico luego radicó en ciudad de Guatemala para estudiar Ciencias de la Comunicación en la Universidad Rafael Landívar. Durante este tiempo recibió clases de dibujo en un colectivo de artistas en el Cerrito del Carmen.
Sus dibujos reflejan la búsqueda de un estilo propio. Sus trazos son influenciados por Shel Silverstein, Martin Prechtel y Tim Burton.
El autor de Lines of Refuge pretende ofrecer un momento de reflexión y provocar más de una risa en el espectador. Luis cambió su perspectiva del mundo tras iniciar a dibujar, encuentra formas en las cosas, carga consigo una cámara para capturar imágenes y volverlas dibujos.
Además de tocar con Appalatin, Luis también integra la banda de Zach Longoria Project y Tristen Brooke, en la espera para hacer la prueba de sonido o los viajes, él aprovecha para pintar y capturar esos momentos.
